Reading stock trades and orders
Tape reading means examining completed trades: when they happened, the price paid, and the number of shares traded. It differs from a quote ticker, which summarizes prices, and from an order book, which shows orders that may not execute.
This educational guide explains Time & Sales and order-book data. This page does not provide a live market-data feed.
Time & Sales
Each row records a completed transaction: time, execution price and share quantity. Several rapid trades show activity, but cannot reveal the participants’ motives or predict the next price.
Bid, ask and depth
The bid is a displayed buying price and the ask a displayed selling price. The difference is the spread. Level II displays additional order-book prices and sizes; orders can change or disappear before execution. Hidden orders and different trading venues limit what any single book shows.
Practice without placing trades
Observe one stock, note the spread and trade pace, then compare displayed orders with completed trades. Keep a journal of observations and alternative explanations. Check whether your platform data is live or delayed and which venues it includes.
